In honor of Suicide Prevention Month (September), Helena SHRM is putting on a special 2 hour training event for our members:  QPR Training

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

Our trainer: United Way Executive Director - Emily McVey

Emily has lived in Montana her whole life. She and her husband, Mike, raised their three children in Helena, participating in several extracurricular activities such as Boy Scouts and all of the sports. Emily’s background includes a formal education in culinary arts, sociology, and public relations, and she has a master’s degree in public administration.

Her nonprofit experience includes working at Florence Crittenton Home, Montana Youth Homes under Rocky Mountain Development Council, as well as volunteering for many other nonprofit organizations. Emily worked for the State of Montana for six years and continues to contract services for licensing kinship foster families for Child and Family Services.  Emily was glad to return to the nonprofit sector in 2019 to work alongside other nonprofits to make meaningful change happen in the tri-county area.

When she is out of the office, Emily enjoys cake decorating, and trying out new hobbies by taking adult education classes.

Emily has been a QPR trainer for approximately 12 years.

    Our Mission

To save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical, and proven suicide prevention training. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.

    What does QPR mean?

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

Please join us for a special HR social and training by the Billings Region Probation & Parole Deputy Chief Katie Weston.

With this training Deputy Chief Katie Weston will go over the challenges that potential workforce can face when they are re-entering the workforce after being incarcerated. After going through this simulation, we are hoping to learn more tips and tricks that can help us tap into more resources that can help with recruitment of difficult to fill positions.

    SHRM research found that:

    • 2 in 3 HR professionals said their organization has hired individuals with criminal records.
    • 85% of HR professionals believe workers with criminal records perform their jobs about the same or better than workers without criminal records.
    • 81% of HR professionals felt the cost-per-hire of workers with criminal records was about the same or less than workers without criminal records.
    • 75% of HR professionals said workers with criminal records were just as or more dependable than workers without criminal records.

    Katie Weston Bio

    • Katie Weston is the Deputy Chief of the Billings Probation & Parole Region. She has been employed with the DOC for ten years, and previous to that worked for Alternatives, Inc. for five years. In her early career, she was part of a grant-funded program called New Path New Life. This program was focused on the reentry of high-risk females coming out of the Montana Women’s Prison and staying in the Billings area. This was the fuel needed for her to realize that reentry is a passion. She has gone on to implement the Reentry Simulation across the State of Montana. The training mimics the life of an offender leaving incarceration for one month post release. She has a BA from Boise State University and grew up in Pinedale, Wyoming.

Simplifying the Family and Medical Leave Act

Providing protected leave to employees under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) helps balance the demands of work and home. It can also create compliance conundrums for HR to unravel. We will walk through tools, guidance and best practices to help navigate these challenges.  This training is intended for supervisors and other individuals who manage employees.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law originally enacted in 1993 and amended in 2008 (and again in 2009). The overall purpose of the FMLA is to mandate that certain large employers provide a balance between the demands of the workplace and the needs of families by providing job-protected, unpaid leave to eligible employees. The FMLA amendments of 2008 and 2009 extended the FMLA to certain military-related situations. The amendments provide leave for qualifying military exigencies and leave for families of covered military members.
